Several multi-billion ringgit toll road agreements sanctioned by ex-premier Mahathir Mohamad’s administration during the height of his privatisation spree in the late 1980s have drawn heavy fire from opposition leaders and civil groups.
The recently declassified deals finally confirmed what many financial experts have been quietly warning about all these years - that the mega-projects were greatly over-priced and overwhelmingly favoured the concessionaires at the expense of taxpayers and commuters.
“There is no excuse. Deals can be mutually re-negotiated and changed. The government just needs to act. It has to be responsible and accountable to taxpayers. Any form of concealed corruption must be investigated,” said Ramon Navaratnam, president of Transparency International …
“It is now very clear that we must have an Inquiry on how the contracts were negotiated and who made the decisions. We also want a transparent revelation on who were the ones who benefited from these deals,” said KeADILan information chief Tian Chua …
